'BOOK OF 100...- Statement of Intent'

'100...' is the magic number!!

my research has began by collecting items/objects or really just 'things' that fit into my hand. This means i have a stash of 100+ small objects and this is just the start...

Shape.colour.scale??

So far i have collected, photographed and drawn these objects, taking the whole '100' thing into consideration,a lot! I'm possibly being a tad too literal with the theme???im thinking 100 of everything!

Obviously scale arises as all of the objects are mighty small and of course fit inside my hand. So,by creating boxes from nets,i can catorgorise in order of size possibly??as well as producing something visual in the way of the net shape...just a thought.

The information i have so far is mainly in the form of image through photography and drawing.Even though i do have surveys,i dont feel i want to focus on figures and statistics of 'things that fit into my hand' just at the moment.

I like the simplicity of the objects/items i have collected, the majority made from plastic, everyday sorta stuff

So i could apply this to the processes i intend to use maybe...crafting/making by hand, printing.i guess this will ultimately depend on context, content, function and of course audience and how one affects the other
And using my brand spankin new camera!...i will record the progress, twists and turns this work takes.

Monday

hmmm....

WHAT IS A BOOK???
apparently...
...a book is...

book n 1.sheets of paper bound together
(more research into this is required for sure!)
but this is definitely a book and it is MY NEWEST NEW NEW book...I LOVE!
Tactile. High Touch Visuals
...well worth it

WHAT IF?...

The Brief:
'WHAT IF A GROUP OF GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENTS GET TOGETHER AND DECIDE TO SOLVE A PROBLEM?
(IN LEEDS!)

So,our problem: LEEDS COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN LOGO DOES NOT REPRESENT THE IDENTITY OF THE INSTITUTION.
The evidence/proof is...
-pilot survey of 50 people,pupils/staff. 84% said in their opinion the logo doesn't represent LCAD accurately

intended and colected Quantative Research:
-questionnaire of multiple choice
-collecting info from journals/internet/scans/photocopies/books

intended and collected Qualatitive Research:
-rank other Art Institution logos in order of preference
-'does logo represent LCAD?' tick sheet
- interview principle
-edited info collected about the logo subject
-collecting other Art Institution logo images

Carrying out surveys and questionnaires to gather both qualatitive and quantative primary evidence was extremeley helpful when tackling this kind of problem. The opinions of others in the first instance lead us to solving this problem. But so many other questions arise when researching, so carrying out these surveys/questionnaires allowed us to gather a bulk of info/opinions efficiently.

Using results from intial surveys then producing multiple choice questionnaires allowed us to gather yet more info plus statictics therefore we could produce summet a bit more visual in the way if graphs and charts.

I really understand now that you have to thoroughly research your subject matter then ideas just pop up! There really is no point in wittering on or creating work if you dont fully understand the subject/'thing'!

NOTE TO MYSELF: when constructing a survey/questionnaire to gather opinionated responses, take care to word the questions appropriately. (so as not to offend!)

Plus: surveys,spider diagrams,blog/articles,drawings,scans/photocopies,collected 'things'

WHERE NEXT...??

After catorgorising my photos, or more my images were caorgorised (which couldn't have been an easy task as it was a pretty poor selection!) the kind of associations, particular elements and possible research topics my group and i made whilst discussing my photos were: (we had to come up with 10)

cotton reels
macro/ close-up photography
composition
childlike/simple
hands
primary colour
block colour
pattern
typography
negative space

I decided to research further into the childlike/simple element of my initial '100 photos' research. I could look at images/visuals, fonts and type, compositions, colour and shape, instructional information, packaging, objects and in general 'things'!
